Subnetting is usually performed according to the requirements of the organization. There are various scenarios in which subnetting is used:

1) One scenario is subnetting according to required subnets

In this scenario, subnetting is performed according to the network requirements. For example, if a company has multiple locations and wants to have a separate network for different locations then multiple networks can be created from one network. This allows the organization to use those networks for other locations.

2) Subnetting according to required hosts

In this scenario, subnetting is performed according to the required hosts. For example, if the organization wants to have only x number of hosts in one network then subnetting is carried out to reduce the number of IPs in one network so that wastage of IPs can be reduced.

3) VLSM (Variable Length Subnetting Mask)

VLSM simply means using or changing the subnet mask according to the network designs requirement. For example, if the organization wants 5 different networks and requires different number of IPs in all 5 locations, VLSM would efficiently allow us to create subnets in which the number of IPs can be saved by using subnet mask as per the requirement.
